Permanent Makeup FAQs
Is there a recovery period or will I need to miss work?

There is no recovery period required for PMU services. Many of our clients return to work the same day as their appointment. We will provide aftercare instructions for you to follow, but the recovery is minimal (minor redness and swelling).

What about Botox before or after my brow appointment?

Botox is not an issue for your brow appointment. There is no minimum time that we need between your Botox and brows. If Botox is planned after your brows, we do recommend waiting 3-5 days just to allow your brows to heal before being handled.

Do I need a consultation?

Our consultation is built into the full session appointment. At your full session, we will recommend a technique based on many factors including skin tone and skin type, map your face to create the perfect shape, select a pigment color to match your natural undertones and/or hair color, and walk you through the entire process in detail! Ultimately, we are working to achieve the most natural and healthy results possible. If you would like to do a consultation over the phone, just text or call and we will set one up! (706) 480-8870

Can I wear makeup to the procedure?

You are encouraged to come to your appointment wearing your makeup just like you normally would. We do not base our measurements or design off of your current makeup, however, knowing what look you are accustomed to helps us gage your expectation of the final product.

Who is not a candidate for PMU?
  • Any person who is currently using Accutane® or has used Accutane® within the last 6 months.
  • Any person who is pregnant or nursing.
  • Any person with a serious skin condition affecting the eyebrow area.
  • Any person who has undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatment within the past 6 months consult with their doctor before scheduling a PMU appointment.
I have had prior work from another PMU artist, will KNS do a touch-up?

We consider all new clients at KNS as 'full sessions.' If you want your previous PMU corrected or enhanced at KNS, please contact us to set up a consultation or send in photos of your current brows.

Our goal is to provide you with the most natural and sustainable enhancement, and results can sometimes be hindered by existing PMU. If we feel your previous PMU needs correcting, we will work with you to develop a plan where we can give you the enhancement you are looking for.

If your previous PMU is light enough to be worked over, we will book you for a full session appointment and will start with new measurements and color matching.

Periodic touch-up appointments do not apply to those who are booking with KNS for the first time.

What about lip filler before my lip blushing appointment?

If you have lip filler before your lip blushing, we recommend 3 weeks between the two services. This allows your filler to settle.

If your filler is scheduled after your lips we recommend waiting 3-5 days to allow your lips to heal before handling.

When do I need a periodic touch-up?

We recommend 1.5 to 3 years between your first appointment and a periodic touch-up. This allows adequate time for the existing pigment to fade and ensures we are maintaining the health of your brow area :) Most of our clients return between 1.5 and 2 years.

Can I have a PMU procedure if I am pregnant or nursing?

You cannot receive a PMU service while pregnant or nursing.

How long will permanent makeup results last?

These techniques are permanent. You may see artists referring to lip blushing, microblading, nanobrow, powderbrow, etc. as 'semi-permanent.' This is a misnomer. Anytime pigment is implanted in the skin, the results should be considered permanent. It is a tattoo.

That said, a skilled artist will implant the pigment into the upper-dermal layers of your skin which will promote some fading and the results may lighten over time. To address this, we recommend a Periodic Touch-up service around 2 years.

What is the difference between Microblading, Powderbrow and Nanobrow?

All three add color, shape, and definition to the brows, but they differ in tool and technique.

Microblading uses a manual hand tool to etch hair-like strokes into the skin. It's the term most people search for, but the technique has been phased out in favor of Nanobrow, its machine-based replacement.

Nanobrow uses a tattoo machine to create the same fine, hair-like strokes as Microblading, with healthier healing and longer-lasting results. Best for clients with fuller natural brow hair and healthy, elastic skin.

Powderbrow also uses a tattoo machine, but creates a soft, shaded look rather than individual strokes. It requires a high level of artistic skill to execute well, and when done right, delivers the most natural-looking results, the healthiest healing, and the best long-term outcomes, including more effective touch-ups over time.

What is the difference between lip blushing and lip neutralization?

Lip blushing involves adding color and definition to your lips. It can be used to create a more defined shape or create deeper/brighter color for your lips.

Lip neutralization is a technique used for people who have areas in the lip that are more pigmented than others. The result is an even tone and even pigmentation across the entire lip. Lip neutralization is similar to lip blushing in that we will add shape and definition, but first need to lighten the more pigmented areas.

Am I a better candidate for Microblading, Powderbrow, or Nanobrow?

The technique we select will be primarily based on your skin type. Powderbrow produces great results in all skin types and is the generally preferred service. If you have oily or mature skin, Powderbrow will give you the higher quality results. Nanobrow is a machine technique that we use in place of Microblading and it is suitable for those with normal to dry skin types that are collagen-rich.

My hair is colored. What color should my eyebrows be?

We understand that your hair color may change and that is not a problem! During the color matching process of your full session appointment, your artist will create a pigment color based off of your existing eyebrow color and skin tone.

How do you decide the shape and color of the brows or lips?

When receiving a full session PMU service at KNS, you will undergo our custom mapping and color matching process. We find the shape of your brow or lips by using the natural geometry of your facial features and create the color based off your natural hair and/or skin tones. During the mapping process, we explain each step to and will not proceed until you are 100% satisfied with the selections.

Medication concerns like chemotherapy and Accutane?

We have two primary medication/treatment concerns: chemotherapy/radiation and Accutane (isotretinoin).

Chemotherapy/radiation: we require 6-months between your last treatment and your tattoo (PMU) service. If you provide a letter from your physician clearing you sooner, we can proceed on their recommendation.

Accutane/Isotretinoin: we require 6 months from the time you stopped using Accutane.

How much training does a permanent makeup artist need?

This is a common question we get, and it's worth understanding before you book because the answer might surprise you.

In most states, permanent makeup and tattooing fall under the health department, not a central board like the Board of Cosmetology. That distinction is significant. Cosmetology licenses (hair, skin, nails) typically require 1,000–2,000+ hours of supervised apprenticeship and standardized testing (theory and hands-on) before someone is licensed. Body art regulation works differently: the health department sets strict standards for the facility, but in states like Georgia, South Carolina, and Michigan, there's no requirement for the artist's actual skill, training, or apprenticeship hours. Some states require a bloodborne pathogens (BBP) certificate, but that's a safety credential, not a measure of technical ability and has nothing to do with whether someone can create a natural and healthy result.

In other words: in many states, someone could legally begin tattooing permanent makeup on clients with zero prior training.

We're not sharing this to scare you, we're sharing it because permanent makeup is permanent, and getting a healed result that looks natural is far more technically demanding than it looks. Skin varies, healing varies, and there's no redo button.

That's why KNS holds our own artists to a much higher bar than the law requires. Every artist goes through an extended apprenticeship under our lead artists, typically a year or more, with thousands of hours of shadowing, theory, practice on latex, and work on dozens of models side by side with a lead-artist, all with continuous feedback from a team obsessed with healed results. We believe that level of commitment is what the stakes actually call for.
